Agriculture, Climate, and Technology: Why Are the Tropics Falling Behind?

چکیده
The tropics, sadly, continues to be a belt of poverty. The countries of the tropics all have low or middling incomes, with a few tiny or natural-resource-rich exceptions, and few of the poorest countries are outside of the tropics. The causes of tropical poverty are surely complex, involving initial endowments (Diamond), history, especially colonization, and geographical isolation (Gallup and Sachs 1999a). Central to the tropical poverty trap, though, is the impact of climate on productivity through the channels of tropical disease ecology and agriculture. This paper investigates the last channel: the causes of lower agricultural productivity in the tropics. The disparity in agricultural productivity between the tropics and the temperate zones is even greater than the disparity in income levels (figure 1). Income per capita in nontropical countries was 3.3 times the level of income per capita in tropical countries in 1995, but agricultural output per worker in the non-tropical countries was 8.8 times the level in the tropics. One would expect that the productivity of agricultural labor in poor tropical countries would be lower whether or not tropical climate or soils had an impact on agriculture. In poor countries, all labor has low wages so that a lot of labor is used in agriculture relative to other factors of production, ensuring low labor productivity in agriculture. Is poverty (due to other causes) rather

Tropical Underdevelopment
Most recent cross-country analyses of economic growth have neglected physical geography as a determinant of economic growth. This paper reviews the distinctive development challenges faced by economies situated in tropical climates. Using geographic information system (GIS) mapping, the paper presents evidence that production technology in the tropics has lagged behind temperate zone technology...
متن کاملThe Use of Housing System in the Management of Heat Stress in Poultry Production in Hot and Humid Climate: a Review
There is a gap between the population growth and protein supply in many tropical countries where per capita income is low and the majority of people consume less protein than a daily standard for recommended protein intake. Poultry egg production remains the fastest route to bridging the protein demand-supply gap in these regions. However, poultry are faced with heat stress in the tropics which...

متن کاملAn Assessment of the Performance and CarcassYield of Broilers Fed Indomie Waste® in the Humid Tropics
This study was conducted using one hundred and eighty (180) day-old broiler chicks, of Anak strain to assess the levels of inclusion of indomie waste meal as a substitute for maize at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. The birds were randomly assigned to dietary treatments using completely randomized design (CRD). Each treatment contained 3 replicates and each replicate had 6 birds. The study lasted for e...
متن کاملDeveloping Countries: A Dynamic Non-Linear Model
This paper attempts to theoretically understand the process of catching-up or falling behind particularly within the context of developing countries. The main aim of the paper consists in investigating the impact of domestic innovation, via its interaction with the learning capability, on the technology gap of an economy. More specifically, we seek to shed some light on why the tendency for poo...
